Our Story
When Frederick D. Lake founded the F. D. Lake Machinery Co. in 1948, it is unlikely that he could have imagined that it would not just survive, but flourish into the next century, becoming one of the largest distributors and fabricators of rigging and lifting products in the state of Michigan. Begun as a broad range construction and mill supply, the company grew to represent over 150 product lines. Fred was joined, and later succeeded by his son, Morton Lake.

By 1971, Mort was ready to retire. His son, Jack, had other interests, so Mort approached, and subsequently sold the business to, his friend and supplier, Stan Carlsen. Stan, a former regional representative of the Wire Rope Corporation of America, was founder of All-Types Rope and Sling Products - a Chicago rigging house which provided lifting slings to F. D. Lake.

At the time, there were a number of industrial supply houses serving western Michigan, but the only true rigging house was in Detroit. Stan envisioned a brighter future for F. D. Lake as a specialty rigging house. The business took a new direction.

Initially, all lifting slings were supplied by All-Types. As the business grew, fabricating and warehousing capabilities were expanded to allow F. D. Lake to fabricate slings in Grand Rapids. In 1976, having outgrown its 36th St. location, Stan's daughter, Caryl, and his son-in-law, Walt, bought the land on Lousma Drive at the corner of Roger B. Chaffee Blvd., where the family business thrives today.

Since 1984, Caryl has owned and been actively involved in the business. She credits President and General Manager, Mike Posey, and the dedicated F.D. Lake staff with it's continuing success.
